    Susanne Katherina Langer (née Knauth) (Decem J ) was an American philosopher of mind and of art, who was influenced by Ernst Cassirer and Alfred North Whitehead. She was one of the first women to achieve an academic career in philosophy and the first woman to be popularly and professionally recognized as an American /5. This volume is the third of three which are designed to present the main trends of Western musical thought in the area of philosophy and aesthetics. Each section of the work, presenting the fundamental statements of a given aesthetic issue, has its own brief introduction defining and interrelating the relevant ideas, and concludes with its own.
